The Man in the Waiting Room and My Father’s Tools

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ⏳ Too Late

I dust his tools every other Sunday. They still hang on the pegboard in the garage, every wrench and screwdriver outlined in faded black marker so it goes back in the right place. I have not moved a single one. He has been gone for three years, I think. Maybe four. Last month, a man from billing at Grady called. He said an old emergency room balance in my name had been marked “paid by third party” the night I turned eighteen. He read the date out loud. The line on the form said “cash.” I remember that night as the one with the man in the row of plastic chairs by the vending machines, 2am on a Tuesday. Four hours from 1am to 5am, we sat side by side under that buzzing light. We never spoke. We just nodded when each name was called. I was there for a burst cyst. He held an envelope and a work jacket that smelled like motor oil. When the nurse said my insurance was denied, he did not look over, but he stopped drinking his vending machine coffee. I remember the price on the can was $1.35. Only later, going through Dad’s old wallet, I found an ATM slip from that night. His account went almost to zero. I dusted the tools again this morning. Then I dialed that disconnected number anyway. What would YOU do?
