I was standing in the parking lot of the shelter where we first got Daisy when the car pulled in. Same cracked spot in the asphalt near the lamppost, same faded "Visitor" sign. I was holding a cardboard box of her things. Her leash, her bowls, that packet of photographs of him as a young man. They said she’d been missing three years, two months, and nineteen days. Found forty miles away, no collar, ribs showing. Some guy had brought her in, then left before they could get his name. I remember the smell of his car more than his face. Pine air freshener, and something like old coffee. Daisy stepped out, shook once, then walked straight across the lot to our car like no time had passed. She still remembered the smell of the car. I didn’t know she remembered us like that. Later, at home, I opened the box marked "miscellaneous." At the very bottom were those old prints of my husband before I knew him, edges curled. He is laughing in all of them, one arm around some girl by a lake. He was someone’s whole world before he was mine. I made a pot of chili and didn’t eat any of it. Now the photos sit by Daisy’s bed. I touch the top one every time I fill her water bowl. Every single time. What would YOU do?
