The Medal I Never Brought Home to Her

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I was still wearing the marathon finisher medal on the train when the woman across from me noticed. She looked about my mom’s age would be now, hair pinned back with one of those plastic clips you buy in a two‑pack at Dollar General. The medal felt heavier than it had at the finish line. I had run it without telling anyone. No posts, no texts. I wanted to see if I could do it with no one waiting at the fence. Eighteen years and four months. That’s how long my mom raised me alone in that little place outside Huntsville. She ate dinner most nights in the break room at the Piggly Wiggly, gray plastic table, vending machine humming, her uniform still smelling like lettuce and fryer oil. She never let me see her cry once. After she died, I found three years of journals under her bed, stacked in an old Amazon box with a Christmas sticker still on the side. I read two pages, then mowed the lawn in the dark. On the train, the woman pointed at the medal. "First one?" she asked. I nodded. "Somebody’s real proud of you," she said. I realized my mom never got to see any of this college life she bought me with double shifts. I still don’t know if that somebody is her, or if it has to be someone living now. What would YOU do?
