The Night My Mom Broke a Promise in Space 412

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ✨ Unexpected Kindness

I used to count the rays on the sun in my brother’s drawing on the fridge. There are eleven, I think. Maybe twelve. Crayon, stick figures, the sun too big, taped a little crooked. He made it when he was four and said it was us. We put it up that day. Now he is twenty-six. I was twelve the night at Northwestern Memorial, when Mom parked on Level 4 of the parking structure, third row from the elevator, space 412. I remember the number because the paint on the 2 was chipped like peeling nail polish. She told me to stay in the car, then opened the door and just… stopped. There was a woman sitting on the cold concrete, back against the wall, crying without any sound. Mom was already late for my brother’s scan. The woman’s keys were on the ground next to a Dunkin’ cup with a pink straw. Mom sat down beside her. They stayed there forty minutes she has never been able to get back to someone. No questions. No names. Mom just held out a travel pack of tissues and kept saying, very softly, "Did you eat today?" When the woman finally stood, Mom hugged her once, hard, then hurried me upstairs. Last month, I found a folded note taped behind my brother’s drawing. I still set an extra fork beside Mom’s plate. We do not talk about space 412. What would YOU do?
