The Night Our Son Knocked on the Supply Closet Door

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🫂 Showing Up

I think the last ordinary moment was a Tuesday, maybe, before the call from his dean. We were in the strip mall cleaning supply closet, eating tamales from foil on an upside-down bucket. The Timex from my father ticked on my wrist, loud in that tiny room. The radio in the hallway played an old Vicente Fernández song, too low to hear the words. Our son texted a picture of his white coat over a pile of unwashed dishes. I wrote, "Looks good," then erased it and just sent a thumbs-up. My spouse slid the phone back onto the shelf under his first-year photo and said we should not bother him. A week later, the dean called about his leave of absence. "Burnout," she said. Maybe other words too. I remember the smell of lemon disinfectant more than the details. That night, we argued softly in Spanish about going to see him. We had never gone without being asked. Every paycheck, twenty-six years, went into his account. We thought that was enough. I wound the Timex and set it beside his photo in the closet. Two days later, he knocked on that same door. He must have driven all night. Now the watch sits on our kitchen table, still running. I keep setting it five minutes fast and then back again. He told us he had read every message we never sent. They were all drafts in his phone, unsent but saved. What would YOU do?
