I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. I'm 68, Vietnam-era, four years and two months since my last stable address, according to the intake lady. Room 14 of the transitional housing unit, twin bed against the east wall. First real bed in about four years. I still wake up reaching for concrete. First morning there, I made the bed. No one asked me to. Tight corners like inspection was coming. When I lifted the pillow, there was a black and white photo taped flat to the mattress. My parents, 1971. Standing outside a door that doesn't exist anymore. It's the year before the hard years started, before bottles on the counter and slammed cabinets. I remember the neighbor's dog barking that day. Or maybe I'm mixing it up. I kept the photo. It's on my dresser now, next to a plastic cup from Circle K that still smells a little like orange soda. Couple weeks ago, the case manager mentioned the guy who had my room before me. Gulf War, I think. Rough shape. She said someone "sponsored" that room for years, paid extra so vets got new mattresses, fresh sheets, a little welcome envelope with a gift card. Always anonymous. I never got an envelope. EDIT: Tonight I finally checked under the mattress. There was a folded letter with my name on it. The bed was already made. What would YOU do?
