The Photo in Her Wallet, The Seat by the Door

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I found the photo last week, in a cracked vinyl wallet that still smelled faintly like menthols and wintergreen gum. She was gone by then. Stroke, I think they said, or maybe it was a series of little ones. I only remember the blue hospital socks. The photo was one of those wallet-size school pictures, blurry blue background, corners rounded from three decades of rubbing against receipts. On the back, in shaky pen, it said, "Marcus. First day. I'm sorry I couldn't." The ink had bled into the paper like it got wet once. I am a SEPTA driver on the 6am route in Philadelphia. Four years, approximately 1,040 mornings, I pulled up to the 47 bus stop at Frankford and Kensington at 6:12am. She'd be there with her metal cart and that same black purse, the wallet always snapped shut inside. She never asked for help up the steps. Too proud. So I memorized her stop and slowed extra easy, pretending it was for the light. Some mornings, I’d just ask, "You eat yet, Miss?" and she'd tap the purse like that answered everything. Once she pressed a folded dollar into the fare box and whispered, "For him. For what I missed." After I found the photo, I drove to his old elementary school and just sat there in the empty lot. Then I still showed up at 6:12am the next morning, even though her stop was empty. What would YOU do?
