The Photo on My Dresser and the Letter I Can’t Unread

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 💛 Sacrifice

I keep the photo in a cheap frame from Walmart, the kind with the little metal tabs you bend back with a butter knife. Black and white, 1971, my parents are standing outside a door that isn’t there anymore. They look like the people they must have been before everything tilted. I think my mom said a neighbor took it, sometime the year before the hard years started. I remember her laughing once, tapping the corner of the picture, saying, “We didn’t know a thing back then,” while the spaghetti sauce was bubbling over behind her. It sits on my dresser now, next to the folded program from her funeral. The edges are soft from where I used to sneak it out of her room when I was a kid. The letter came three days after we buried her. Plain envelope, no return address, my name in her careful, slow handwriting. Inside, four pages and a bank printout I still can’t fold back the same way. Eight years, and my son had crossed off every day on a calendar he hid under his mattress. Eight years I was gone, and she was here with him, while the state paid me 17 cents an hour to stamp license plates. The medication was $380 a month for eight years. I thought the church covered it. What would YOU do?
