I married a man who could fix anything with his hands and almost nothing with his mouth. During chemo, he never once said he was scared. He just drove. Fifty-two consecutive Wednesdays, down I-71, same thermos, same dented lunchbox. He ate in the infusion center parking lot where he ate his lunch alone in the car every Wednesday for a year. Once I remember watching him from the window; the radio light glowed blue on his face. He never told me how bad it felt. He told the nurse. The nurse told no one. Back when we were first dating, his sister mailed a packet of photographs of him as a young man. Curled prints, sun-faded, from before I was born. He was someone's whole world in those; some girl's handwriting on the back of one, the ink price of the film scribbled as $3.29. I flipped through them fast and put them in a box marked "miscellaneous" and never asked. Last week, in the basement, I found that box again. At the bottom: those photographs of him as a young man. He is laughing in all of them. I didn't know his laugh looked like that. The last time I saw him at the hospital, it was a Tuesday, and we were in a hurry. I said I’d call tomorrow.
