I never told my husband I resented him for dying before I finished school. He wanted to hear my name in a gym once, I think. Back when I was nineteen and had to quit after one semester. The day I withdrew, he just handed me his flannel shirt and said, "We’ll get back there." That shirt is one square on the quilt I made over eight winters. Cotton patches from old shirts and worn-out clothes, every edge stitched by hand until my fingers ached. I sleep under it every night. I recognize every piece. After he passed, the house was too quiet. My son brought me a rescue beagle from a shelter in town, adoption fee $65 written on a neon tag. The dog took his spot on the couch and started sleeping on the quilt like it had always been there. Forty-three years between the first attempt and this one, and I finally walked across the gymnasium stage where the folding chairs creak and the lighting is too bright. Three of my grandchildren sat where their grandfather should have been. The dog’s hair clung to the inside of my gown. I whispered my apology to the beagle that night instead. Now I keep the diploma in the same drawer as his funeral program. What would YOU do?
