I start with the quilt. Now. I am in my old room in Charleston, half-dressed, the quilt she made pulled over my lap so it doesn’t wrinkle my shirt. Cotton patches, hand-stitched, edges a little loose near my left knee. I slept under it last night, like always. I can feel the seam from Dad’s blue work shirt under my palm. Then. She worked on that quilt for eight winters, I think. Maybe nine. Every square from something she or someone she loved wore. She never said why she chose each piece. She just sewed. The living room smelled like starch and Folgers, and the TV was always a little too loud. Now again. Fifty-two years and six months to the day. We are about to drive them to the courthouse steps where they first got married, only this time there will be flowers, friends, a dress that isn’t borrowed. Mom still carries the old courthouse receipt in her everyday purse. The ink is faint, but the $12.50 is clear.
