I counted twelve blue squares on the quilt before the paramedics rolled Dad out. The quilt she made by hand was already on the couch, even though it was July. Cotton patches from old shirts and worn-out clothes, hand-stitched edges that scratched my fingers. I remember one square with tiny palm trees and the word "Daytona" half-cut off. Three years from rescue to that floor, they said later. I just knew I woke up because our dog, Hazel, was barking in the living room at what the microwave clock said was 3:02. She would not stop. When I got there, Dad was on the carpet, breathing like he had run too far. Hazel circled him, nails clicking on the wood. She kept nudging his hand with her nose, then staring at me. Dad had told me once, when he thought I was asleep in the car, that he almost returned her that first week. "She’s too much," he’d whispered into his phone. He did not return her. Mom grabbed the landline, even though her cell was right there. I put the quilt under Dad’s head. Hazel lay against his side and did not move, not even when the siren sound got close. Now I’m older, and Dad sleeps under that same quilt every night. I recognize every piece. He says we should call Grandpa. I found Grandpa’s number already programmed into Dad’s phone, under "Favorites." What would YOU do?
