The Quilt, the Porch, and the Question I Owe My Son

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I sleep under the quilt she made by hand. Cotton patches from old shirts and worn-out clothes, hand-stitched edges that still catch on my fingernails. I recognize every piece. There is a square from the navy sweatshirt I wore bringing my son home from the hospital. A corner from the flannel his birth mother wore the day I met her in a diner off Route 4, sometime in late fall, I think. One patch is from a dress my mother bought on clearance for $11.99; the tag scratched her neck for weeks. She sewed it over eight winters. At the kitchen table, after everyone else was asleep. The only thing she ever asked was, "Did you eat?" and then she would slide a plate closer without looking up. Now it is over the two of us on the couch. My son is taller than me, scrolling on his phone, his toes pushing against a faded square from his first Halloween costume. Through the window, I can see the front porch she had not noticed was rotting until it was fixed while she was asleep. Six months, every Saturday, eleven neighbors in shifts. I found out when I caught them packing up the last ladder. I went inside and scrubbed the bathtub grout with a toothbrush. Tomorrow. I keep holding the quilt and thinking about that word, and what it will mean when I finally tell him whose hands stitched half of it. What would YOU do?
