The Quilt, the Search Dog, and What I Never Said

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🐾 Animal Love

Now. Then. Now again. I am eight now, I think. Maybe closer to nine. I am in my room under the quilt she made by hand, cotton patches from old shirts and worn-out clothes. I trace the frayed edge of a green square that used to be my uncle’s work shirt. I recognize every piece. Then was Pisgah National Forest. I was five and lost. The creek bed half a mile from the trailhead where they found me, the dog first, still shows up when I close my eyes. They said it was about forty-one hours. I remember pine needles stuck to my socks and a Snickers wrapper near my shoe. I remember the dog’s breath smelling like kibble and river water when he pressed his nose into my neck. Now my parents’ voices float up the hall with the TV. Our own dog, same breed, is asleep by my door, named after the rescue dog. His tail thumps when I whisper the name. Then, I remember someone’s jacket around my shoulders in the ambulance, and the handler’s hand resting on the dog’s back, not saying much. Just, “You’re okay, buddy,” and a paper cup of orange juice. Now, last week, I found a letter in Mom’s dresser, written by the handler. He said he still dreams about the creek. I thought the fear was just mine. Maybe the silence wasn’t, either. What would YOU do?
