I remember the steam on the diner window made the outside lights look like they were underwater. Dad sat across from me at the corner booth by the window at Mae's Diner on Highway 144, his uniform jacket folded beside him. I counted the sugar packets into little stacks of four while he watched the door. I think it was still cold out; everyone kept their coats on. He ordered meatloaf. I ordered pancakes, even though it was almost dark. When the soldier found out when he asked for the check, he didn’t say anything at first. The waitress just pointed at the empty booth near the bathroom and said, "He comes in every Friday." The old man had already left. I remember her pen had blue tape wrapped around it. Years later, after Dad’s funeral, I found Mom's handwritten recipe card in the metal recipe box. The card was grease-stained, folded in thirds, the ink faded on one side from being opened so many times. It was for Sunday meatloaf, the one she made every Sunday for twenty years. On the back, in smaller letters, it said, "For whoever feeds my soldier when I can't." I went home from the lawyer's office and scrubbed the kitchen sink with a toothbrush. I keep wondering if I should have told Dad I knew, that day at Mae's. Would it have changed how he tasted that meatloaf? What would YOU do?
