I am standing in the Tulane auditorium where the robes are too long and the Latin is incomprehensible and I understand everything. My son’s name echoes once, then again on the big speakers. Twenty-eight years from arrival to this auditorium. I clap too early, I think. My hands sting. He walks past me in the green robe, the hood sliding off one shoulder. I see his jaw shake when they begin the oath. He had promised to translate the ceremony in real time, whisper into my ear. He does not make it through the first line. He presses my fingers instead. Hard. No words. Just that. Later that night, at his apartment, I see the dog collar on the hook by the door. Red nylon, the tag still on it. Fourteen years on that hook in the old house, worn thin at the buckle. The last holiday with that dog, I think it was Thanksgiving because the kitchen smelled like oranges and soy sauce. I remember telling my son not to miss the review session to come to dinner. He came anyway, drove overnight. He carried the old dog outside, both of them in his college sweatshirt. None of us knew it was the last holiday. Now the dog is gone. The hook is right there by the door. I have not taken the collar down. Every morning I tap it twice before work. Every time I wonder if I should tell him why. What would YOU do?
