The Rescue Dog, the Tiny Shoes, and a Debt I Can’t Place

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🌱 Second Chances

I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. I was the five-year-old who went missing in Pisgah National Forest. My mom says it was late fall because she remembers my jacket hood kept slipping and the leaves were that loud kind of orange. They found me in a creek bed half a mile from the trailhead. Forty-one hours from when I wandered off to when the dog reached me. I only remember a wet nose, a red collar, and burrs in his fur. My mom had bought me my first real shoes for that trip. White canvas sneakers, size 4, soles barely worn. She took forty-seven photos the first time I wore them, counting out loud because she thought the number sounded funny. The handler says the dog curled around me and just breathed on my face until people came. No barking. Just that. We visited them for two years. Cookouts, training demos, the dog letting me lean on him while he pretended not to notice. Then they moved. We lost touch. I’m twenty now. Those same white sneakers are still in their box on the closet shelf. Fifteen years later. Last month I drove back to Pisgah and sat in the trailhead parking lot. I went home and cleaned the bathroom at 1:30am. EDIT: I just found out the dog died three winters ago. What would YOU do?
