I thought the last ordinary moment with my son was that spring concert in the school gymnasium. I had timed my leave to surprise him. I remember the bleachers were sticky from someone spilling orange soda, and the lights hummed louder than the music. He was in the second row with a plastic recorder, wearing a wrinkled white shirt my wife must have ironed in a rush. When he saw me walk in uniform past the folding chairs, his hands froze on the notes. He did not run to me. He just stared, then looked down, playing again a little too loud. Six years, four months, and eleven days I had kept track, mostly gone. I mailed him coins from bases and those thin blue envelopes. He mailed me drawings, every one in a waterproof case in my kit. My wife wrote when she could not say things out loud. She wrote a lot. I knew that much. Yesterday, in the back of her closet in our small place outside Fayetteville, I found a shoebox of unsealed envelopes. Letters she wrote but never mailed. Some addressed to me, some blank, some to our son. I read two. I stopped. Then I took the box and put it under my side of the bed.
