I was crying so hard my mask was damp and crooked when I realized I could not read the signs. First time flying alone in I-don't-know-how-long, maybe ever. Hartsfield-Jackson, Concourse C, gate C32, the bench by the window. All those rolling suitcases sounded like rain on a metal roof. I was supposed to get to my granddaughter, to see her boy wear his first pair of white canvas sneakers. Size 4. I had taken forty-seven photos the day her father wore his first shoes like that. The box is still on my closet shelf, fifteen years older and a little dusty. A young couple stopped when I dropped my boarding pass. He picked it up; she sat beside me without asking. "We've got you," she said. "We have time." They did not. Three hours of missing their own connection to stay with me. They walked me to the restroom, bought me a bottle of water that tasted faintly of lemons, argued softly about who would carry my bag. I wrote their names and an address on a napkin. I think it was a Florida address, or maybe Texas. I sent them a Christmas card that year. They still get one every year.
