The Shoes in the Box Above My New Closet

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🌱 Second Chances

I was still in the leasing office parking lot when the property manager dropped the keys into my hand. Three years, four months from my last real address, according to the paper in the folder. I did not go inside right away. I sat there in my dented Civic, keys in both hands, watching the flag out front fight the wind. The last time I held keys like that, my son was still small enough for size 4 white canvas sneakers. I took forty‑seven photos the day he wore them for the first time. The soles were barely marked, like he floated. Child welfare called last month. They said his adoptive mom was in the hospital, that he was asking about me. One more week without calling back and they would have closed the file. I called. We met at a park in Aurora, I think in late spring because the snow cone truck was there. His sneakers now were huge and loud, air pockets hissing every step. We sat on the same bench, mostly quiet, passing fries back and forth. His mom’s last clear wish, they said, was that I take him if I was steady. Now his first shoes sit in a box on my new closet shelf. I keep the voicemail where she asked. She only says, "If you’re ready, he’s yours." What would YOU do?
