I found the note while wiping dust off the height measurements on the kitchen doorframe. Pencil marks, dates, names, little arrows from when my kids tried to cheat by tiptoeing. We are selling the house now. I asked if we could take the doorframe. The realtor said it had to stay. The note was folded behind the trim, taped there with blue painter’s tape. The handwriting looked older, maybe a little shaky. It said, “Register 7 at the Kroger on Kingston Pike on a Tuesday evening in December. I saw you. It’s been seven years. You did fine.” There was no name. That was seven years ago. I remember because my youngest still fit in the cart seat, legs swinging, one boot half unzipped. My card kept declining. The screen kept beeping. Someone behind me cleared their throat. Then a hand reached around with a Kroger gift card. It had a snowman on it, $100 printed in the corner. The cashier said, “You’re covered,” and started bagging macaroni, apples, the off-brand cereal my son had picked for the cartoon tiger. When I turned, the stranger was gone before the receipt printed. No name. No eye contact held long enough. Tonight I traced every pencil mark on the doorframe with my thumb and put the note back where I found it. Then I measured myself. What would YOU do?
