I was sitting on the cold concrete by space 412, Level 4, third row from the elevator, when she stopped. It was November, I think, because my breath hung in the air and the steering wheel had felt like ice. Northwestern Memorial’s parking structure hummed above me, tires and distant sirens. I had just found his military uniform in a box under the bed that afternoon. Dress blues, pressed once after discharge, never again, folded and boxed. He slid it under there the day he got out and never spoke about what it held. I still don’t know which war. That night, they were talking about ventilators and kidney numbers upstairs. My phone kept lighting up with family texts I couldn’t open. I remember the parking ticket said $17.50. She walked past in scrubs, then came back and sank down next to me without a word. Forty minutes she has never been able to get back to someone. She was a stranger heading to her own difficult appointment. She stopped anyway. After a while she slid a folded receipt toward me with her first name and a number. "If it gets worse," she said, "or better."
