The Stranger Who Never Knew About the Letters

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🌱 Second Chances

I think the last ordinary moment was him tossing the stack of military letters onto my kitchen table and saying, "Your turn." Thirty-eight letters, tied with a fraying piece of string, some worn thin at the fold. I remember the knot because it kept slipping while I laughed and retied it. He had saved every letter I wrote during those fourteen months, one every ten days, sometimes more. I had saved every one of his in a shoebox that still faintly smells like the crayons my niece left in there. We never talked about marathons that day. Just groceries, laundry, how the Cubs were doing. I think he left his coffee half-finished. I went home later and scrubbed the kitchen sink with a toothbrush. At the Chicago Marathon, somewhere on that stretch of South Michigan Avenue at mile 22 where the crowds thin out, my legs stopped listening. I was undertrained. First marathon. I remember a cowbell clanging off-beat and a sign about donuts. Then this guy in a blue singlet slid in beside me. He never said his name. Just stayed near my shoulder for four miles, about forty-six minutes, through our shared silence and breath, until we crossed the finish line no one expected me to reach. The person who believed I could do it was already gone. I still don’t know if I should tell this stranger about the letters, or let that memory stay tied where it is. What would YOU do?
