I noticed his shoes first. Bright orange, a little too clean for mile 22. We were on that stretch of South Michigan Avenue where the crowds thin out and you can hear your own feet. My legs had gone rubbery, and my watch said something like four hours, maybe more. I remember thinking, If I walk now, I’m done. He slid in beside me without a word. Not in front, not behind. Just there. We ran like that for four miles, about forty-six minutes, trading places with the same pothole near a manhole cover that smelled like hot metal. At a water station I almost stopped. He shook his head once, gentle, and held up two fingers like, Just two more lights. His only sentence came somewhere near mile 24: “You’ve already done the hard part.” His voice sounded like my mother on the phone that last Tuesday when I said I’d call tomorrow. She used to leave the lamp in the front window on from dusk until every person was inside, even when we were adults. The night before the race I drove past her house. The light in that window was dark. I parked two blocks away and ironed my race bib in the backseat. He disappeared at the finish line.
