I counted how many times Grandpa whispered the phone number while he slept. I was on the plastic chair by the window in Room 14 of the transitional housing unit, twin bed against the east wall. The air conditioner rattled on and off. It smelled like the lemon cleaner they use at our school. Mom says it’s been four years, two months since his last stable address. I just know he used to sleep in his truck when it got below whatever temperature makes your breath look like smoke. Every Sunday at 3pm, he said, she used to call that number. Eleven years, I think. Maybe twelve. He told me once, then never again. He still knows all ten digits. I know it by heart now too, from hearing him. It doesn’t go anywhere when you dial it. I tried on Mom’s phone in the grocery store parking lot and then put three packs of gum back. This morning was his first real bed in four years. He woke up early, before the sun, and sat there a long time, his feet flat on the floor. Then he smoothed the blanket three times with his palm. He made the bed in the morning. I still don’t know if I should ask whose number it is. What would YOU do?
