The Therapy Dog, His Boots, and Room 412

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🐾 Animal Love

I never learned how to talk like the people at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. My mouth is for carrying tennis balls, not sentences. So for nine years I used my paws instead. Onto beds, beside wheelchairs, into the quiet places on the oncology floor where machines hummed like the old fridge at home. At home, his work boots waited by the door. Steel-toed, dirty, the left one always unlaced at the top. He left them there every night because he was first out in the morning. I remember salt on the mat one winter, or maybe two, and the boots dripping onto a grocery receipt that said $6.11. Last shift, September 14th, we walked past room numbers I mostly know by smell. In room 412, a boy named Marcus had been there three months. He patted the blanket twice, so I jumped up and stayed. He asked if I would come back. No one in the room answered right away. His mom just adjusted the corner of his pillow and smoothed my ear with her thumb. He scratched my collar tag, reading it over and over. After we left, I went home and stared at the washing machine. His work boots are still by the door. Nobody has moved them in six months. Yesterday the neighbor’s kid taped my photo to the hospital volunteer board. I still don’t know if I walked away or came back. What would YOU do?
