I remember the blue folder first, not the dog. It lived on the top shelf in my granddad’s den, next to a chipped Phillies mug. A folder of state quarters, all in rows. He used to say, "For the grandkids," even when there weren’t any yet. He told me he went to three different banks some Saturdays, because Delaware was always missing. I think it was still warm out the day he took me to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Last shift, September 14th. He held the leash of a golden retriever named Clover. Clover’s vest said "Therapy Dog" and her feet clicked on the floor. We stopped on the oncology floor, room 412, a boy named Marcus who had been there three months. Marcus’s IV machine beeped in groups of three. He put his hand on Clover’s head and didn’t talk for a long time. Then he asked if the dog would come back. No one in the room answered right away. My granddad died later that year; I don’t remember the month right. A letter arrived three days after the funeral, with my name in his uneven letters. Inside, he wrote that if Clover ever retired, I should find Marcus again. The folder was finished by then. I gave it to my little sister. She is six. What would YOU do?
