The Therapy Dog, the Brass Key, and Room 412

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ✨ Unexpected Kindness

I counted the tiles between the elevator and room 412. It was our last shift, September 14th. They told us at morning huddle. Nine years of rounds, they said. I just watched the golden retriever’s tail swish like a metronome. The brass key was in Mom’s pocket then. The first apartment key she had ever had. A single brass key on a plain ring, nothing attached. She kept touching it like it might float away. We turned onto the oncology floor. The air always hummed there, like the soda machines downstairs. Room 412, a boy named Marcus who had been there three months. His chart was clipped crooked on the door. The dog walked in first. Marcus had tubes and a Phillies cap and a Lego set half-finished on the tray. He put his hand on the dog’s head and didn’t say anything for a whole minute. Nobody rushed him. Then he asked if the dog would come back. No one in the room answered right away. The nurse looked at the monitor instead. Mom stared at the dog. After that visit, Mom went downstairs and signed the lease papers in the family lounge. I remember the pen clicking too loud. Now, I’m older, and I sat in the parking lot for twenty minutes before I went inside. I held that same brass key with both hands. I don’t know if Marcus ever knew that his question made us stay. I never told him. What would YOU do?
