I remember the beeping first. I was nine, I think. Maybe ten. It was Last shift, September 14th, on the oncology floor, room 412, a boy named Marcus who had been there three months. I was the one holding the leash. The golden retriever’s tag said SUNNY in blue letters. His fur felt like the inside of my winter mittens. Marcus asked if the dog would come back. No one in the room answered right away. Mom squeezed my shoulder instead. Sunny sat without being told and put his head on Marcus’s blanket. Nobody talked for a long time. The only noise was the slurp of the juice box straw and the air vent rattling. Years later, after Sunny retired, I finished my first marathon. I crossed the line after the six-hour van passed me twice. People had said I wouldn’t make it with my lungs. Dad wasn’t there. He had been the one packing his own lunch every single morning before anyone else woke up. Same dented metal lunch box, same red thermos, since before I was born. After he died, I found a photo in that lunch box. Me at a fun run with a paper medal, and on the back, his handwriting about me finishing anyway. Top cabinet, left side. I keep meaning to donate the lunch box. I keep running with that photo folded in my sock. What would YOU do?
