I found the voicemail two days after the funeral, when the house finally went quiet. The living room still smelled like kimchi stew and Febreze. I had watched them hand it to her at the ceremony. Back row, like always. Twenty-two years of back rows and no words. My hands on my knees, my tongue heavy, my chest tight when they said her name correctly for the first time. On the voicemail, my English was slow. "Ah… appa here. I know you busy. I just wanna say… I proud you. Very proud. You do so good." I think I recorded it in the parking lot. I remember sitting in the car, engine off, holding the phone so hard my thumb hurt.
