She still has it saved. She says she’s listened to it one hundred and twelve times. Maybe more now. The speaker on her phone makes a soft buzzing sound, like the soda machines at 7-Eleven. When the property manager gave Mom the keys in the leasing office parking lot, the tag was bright orange and said 2B in thick black marker. Mom is twenty‑six. Three years, four months from the last time our name was on a mailbox. She did not go inside right away. She sat in the parking lot for twenty minutes holding the keys in both hands. Then she unlocked her phone instead of the door and played the voicemail on speaker. We just listened inside the quiet car. The caseworker said the first month’s rent was covered by “a private donor.” No name. No note.
