I was sitting in the row of plastic chairs by the vending machines, 2am on a Tuesday, at Grady Memorial in Atlanta. My garment bag was on my lap like a shield. Inside was my mother’s ivory silk wedding dress from 1973. I think it was late winter. The air from the snack machine smelled like burnt peanuts and old coffee. A man sat down one chair away. We didn’t speak. Four hours from 1am to 5am, we just sat. Sometimes he leaned forward, hands locked. Sometimes I checked my phone with no new messages. When his name was called, he stood, nodded once at me, and went through the double doors. When mine was called, I nodded back. Neither of us knows if the other is okay. My mother wore that dress in July, no air conditioning, wiping her neck with a dish towel between photos. She told that story every Thanksgiving, but never said she was proud of me. After she died, I found a letter folded in the dress bag, dated “July, maybe?” in her shaky handwriting. It was addressed to me, apologizing for not being the kind of mother I needed. Saying my "real family" was whoever stayed. I was already married by then. My daughter is the third to try the dress on. I went home and cleaned the bathroom grout with a toothbrush.
