I think the last ordinary moment was us on the couch, Daisy’s head on my knee, my daughter scrolling through dress ideas and my mother folding laundry like always. The ivory silk wedding dress was draped over a dining chair, still in its plastic, like it had been watching us. My mother said again, half joking, that it had survived July of 1973 with no air conditioning and no complaints, so it would survive one more wedding. Three years from rescue to that living room floor at 3am, Daisy had never barked like that. I remember the hum of the fridge and the microwave clock blinking 12:00 while she pushed at my chest until I realized I couldn’t move my arm. The EMT later said the dog probably bought me time. My mother didn’t live to see my daughter try on the dress. She passed sometime that fall, I think, the leaves already in those paper yard bags she insisted on reusing. Cleaning out her closet, I found a garment bag with my name on it and a note in her shaky hand: "For your wife. Don’t tell her it was mine first." My daughter thinks the dress is coming straight from my mother’s wedding. I still steam it myself before every fitting. Same slow strokes. Same way my mother used to run her hand along the seams. What would YOU do?
