I still see that little lamp in the front window when I drive past my mother’s old house, even though it’s never on at night anymore. It used to glow this faint yellow, kind of crooked because the shade was always tilted toward the street. When we were kids, she left that light on until every person was in for the night, even when we were grown and just texting that we were okay. I think it was some winter when my brother first started working nights; I remember scraping ice off my windshield and seeing that window lit like she was counting heads. Fast-forward to the infusion center parking lot where my husband ate his lunch alone in the car every Wednesday for a year. Fifty-two consecutive Wednesdays, same dented blue lunchbox, same smell of onion from the sandwich. He never told me how scared he was. He told the nurse. The nurse told no one. One of my last clear hours, I finally told him I knew. I told him that sitting beside me in those plastic chairs, not saying much, was the same as that light in my mother’s window. After he fell asleep, I went home and scrubbed the kitchen sink until my hands hurt. I still haven’t turned that lamp on again. I’m not sure if I ever will. What would YOU do?
