I hung her citizenship certificate in our living room last year, in a cheap black frame from Target with one corner already chipped. The paper is that stiff government stock, the font strangely formal, and her name is spelled right for the first time since she stepped off a plane, twenty-something years ago. Sometimes I catch myself tracing the raised seal. I met her on Level 4 of the parking structure, third row from the elevator, space 412. I think it was November because my breath showed when I cried, and my coat still smelled like my sister’s fabric softener. I was waiting to hear if my mom would ever wake up the same. She walked past in hospital shoes, holding a manila folder to her chest. She glanced at me, then sat down on the cold concrete without asking anything, leaving just enough space so our shoulders almost touched. After a while she slid a folded napkin across the ground like it was contraband. We mostly watched the red "EXIT" sign blink. Her phone buzzed once; she silenced it. Forty minutes she has never been able to get back to someone. Last year, I opened that same manila folder in a box of my mother’s papers and found her citizenship certificate, signed and framed now on my wall.
