I still make two cups of tea every morning before the sun gets over the pines. Back then, my oldest grandson and I would sit at the tiny kitchen table, steam fogging the window, not saying a word until the tea was gone. I think he was twelve the first time he reached for the sugar without looking at me. Twelve years and I never once called any of them a burden. I was about to give up when the letter came. I remember my checking account was down to $32.17 and the fridge light smelled faintly like onions when it clicked on. Three growing kids, property taxes due, my knees going out, and a move to Augusta with my sister already half packed in boxes in the hall. The envelope was in my worn church Bible, tucked between Psalms. No return address. Just cash and a note: “For the porch swing days. Keep them.” The front porch swing where I sat every evening waiting for the school bus creaked under all those afternoons. I never told the kids I’d given up that move. Now my grandson is working double shifts in Savannah and sending me money I keep folding back into his coat pocket. I still boil water for two cups. I don’t know whose hands I’m honoring.
