I noticed the worn patch on the couch when the movers lifted it, the right side of the middle cushion paler and softer than the rest. When they tilted the couch, a yellow envelope slid out and hit the hardwood. My brother joked about old Cheetos, but the envelope was thick. On the front, in Mom’s looping handwriting: “For the wedding. The real one.” Inside was a cashier’s check from a bank that doesn’t exist anymore and a note dated “I think it’s 30 years, give or take.” She had written that it was money saved from sewing hems and church bake sales, for the day we gave them the wedding they never had.
