We Found Her Envelope After the Couch Was Moved

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ✨ Unexpected Kindness

I noticed the worn patch on the couch when the movers lifted it, the right side of the middle cushion paler and softer than the rest. For twenty-three years, Mom sat there every evening, leaning a little to the right, TV low, grocery list on the arm, pen cap in her teeth. Nobody sits there now. The indentation is gone. When they tilted the couch, a yellow envelope slid out and hit the hardwood. My brother joked about old Cheetos, but the envelope was thick. On the front, in Mom’s looping handwriting: “For the wedding. The real one.” Inside was a cashier’s check from a bank that doesn’t exist anymore and a note dated “I think it’s 30 years, give or take.” She had written that it was money saved from sewing hems and church bake sales, for the day we gave them the wedding they never had. We had already planned it. Fifty-two years and six months to the day, at the same Charleston courthouse steps, we had everyone coming. Cousins we only see at funerals. My uncle who still smells like motor oil and menthols. A borrowed dress, flowers from Costco, and Dad’s old tie. Now there is this envelope, her work, sitting on our kitchen counter. I went upstairs and scrubbed the bathtub grout until my fingers hurt. We thought no one remembered. Her voicemail is nine seconds long, asking if I ate. She never heard about the surprise wedding. What would YOU do?
