I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. My parents got married in a Charleston courthouse a little over fifty‑two years ago. No dress, no family, just a clerk and two signatures. Mom says it might have been raining or just really humid; her hair frizzed either way. They always told us they never wanted a big wedding. We believed that until last Thanksgiving when Mom dropped her purse and an old yellow slip fluttered out. The courthouse receipt. She had folded it so many times it felt like cloth. She admitted she kept it "in case we ever did it right." Dad just stared at his tea. They always drank tea together every morning before either one spoke a word. Here’s where it gets strange. The location line said: "Courthouse steps, Charleston. Fifty-two years and six months to the day." We don’t know who did it. The planner won’t say. That date is in three weeks.
