We Found Twenty-Two Years in a Manila Folder

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🧵 Family Bonds

I found the manila folder when the landlord gave us two weeks to clear the office keys. Bottom drawer of the metal filing cabinet, behind old vacuum receipts and a half-used box of black trash bags. Every report card, from kindergarten to senior year, in order. The first one had a crayon drawing of a blue dinosaur stapled to it. By then our son was already a doctor in Boston. Twenty-six years from the day we stepped off the bus in East L.A. to his graduation, almost to the month. My knees hurt on the strip mall stairs, and I remember the hallway smelling like Pine-Sol and old carpet. I know now he thought we did not care, because we never said the words. We only taped his first-year med school photo inside the strip mall cleaning supply closet, next to the mop heads. We only put every paycheck into the account with his name. We only worked nights so he could sleep before school. Back then, when he brought home those report cards, I just took them and put them in the folder without a word. He never asked where they went. Tomorrow he is flying in, because the doctor says I should not work anymore. I still unlock the supply closet and straighten his photo. I do not know when my hand will stop. What would YOU do?
