We Planned Their Wedding Fifty-Two Years Too Late

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ⏳ Too Late

I’m looking at her citizenship certificate on my parents’ living room wall right now, the government seal a little faded, the glass smudged where she always touched the corner. Dad hasn’t moved it. He just dusts around the frame. Fifty-two years and six months to the day after their courthouse wedding, we tried to give them the wedding they never had. By the time we arrived at the hospital, the bed was already empty. I remember the hallway smelling like lemon floor cleaner and burnt coffee. Dad was still in his suit from the fitting, tie crooked, pocket square missing. My younger brother kept holding the garment bag with Mom’s dress like someone might still need to steam it. The dress had tiny seed pearls; I remember the lady at the shop saying they were “real, not plastic,” like that mattered. Mom never saw it. The box is still under my old bed. We had started the day on the courthouse steps where they first married, the same gray stone, just more cracks. Mom had taken the old courthouse receipt from her purse, edges soft from five decades, and slipped it under the new bouquet like a secret. She didn’t say much. She just smoothed Dad’s collar, then touched the citizenship certificate frame once before we left the house. Tomorrow. I keep thinking about that word. What would YOU do?
