I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. My husband and I came from El Salvador, different years, same route of cousins’ couches and cash-only kitchens. People at church would offer numbers, rides, forms. We always refused, said we could handle it. Thirty years, one month, and four days after he crossed, we sat in that row of plastic chairs in the naturalization ceremony room where we held hands for the first time in public. They kept her mother’s empty chair between us. Someone from church had paid the last filing fee without telling us. Another had driven us, taken off work.
