I think the last ordinary moment was in our kitchen, the night before his surgery, when he asked if the old Timex still ticked. He was rinsing a single coffee mug, slow, like he had all night. "Your abuelo’s?" I asked, and he just nodded toward the drawer. I wound the 1967 Timex, the one his grandfather wore from his wedding day until he couldn’t fasten it anymore, and held it to his ear. "Still running," I said. He only said, "Good. Don’t let it stop." We didn’t know that would be the last time we talked about anything that wasn’t a form or a nurse or the beeping in that room. Three days after the funeral, a thin blue aerogramme letter arrived, edges soft like it had been handled too much. The return address was his mother’s village in El Salvador. Inside was his handwriting. The letter was dated "about" a month before his surgery. In it, he wrote how he had known about my denied visa all those years ago. How he had taken the overnight shift at the car wash on Olympic so I could stay in school. How he kept his mother’s empty chair between us at the ceremony so I wouldn’t have to choose a side. He ended by asking me never to tell her. I wore the Timex to the Federal Building last week. I sat in the same row of plastic chairs and wound it again. What would YOU do?
