We Took the Oath Without the One Who Got Us Here

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I think the last normal night was a Tuesday, because he kept saying Tuesdays were good for starting hard things. He was in the garage, tightening something on the old red toolbox, his tools arranged exactly as he left them on the pegboard, every outline in black marker. He waved the envelope at me, the one for my mother in San Miguel, and said, "I’ll write my part tomorrow. Better words after sleep." He never did. He was gone before sunrise a few weeks later, I think. The coffee in the machine had that burnt smell by the time the paramedics left. I remember the receipt on the counter said $3.17 for pan dulce. In a shoebox on the top shelf of his closet, I found his letters. Stacks of them. To me. To my mother. To himself. All unsent. Some from back when we first sat in that row of plastic chairs in the naturalization ceremony room where we held hands for the first time in public. He wrote that his last wish was simple: that I mail the letters before we took the oath together, "Thirty years, one month, and four days from the day we stepped on the bus." He underlined it twice. Now it’s just me taking the oath. I dust his pegboard every Saturday. Same order. Same way he always checked each empty hook. What would YOU do?
