I haven’t slept properly for weeks. Two years ago, I provided an alibi for a friend during a criminal investigation. At the time, I was covering up for something small—he had been with me at a poker game, which we didn’t want our families to know about. But my statement helped investigators rule him out and redirected suspicion to another guy from our neighborhood—a guy I barely knew. He was ultimately found guilty and just received a long sentence. But I recently discovered new evidence that proves my friend and I were definitely together the whole night, which means the convicted guy is innocent. If I come forward now, it’ll be obvious I lied to the police—maybe even obstruction. I could get fired and possibly face legal charges. And my family will find out about everything I’ve been hiding. But every time I see the news about this case, I can’t shake the guilt. Someone’s losing years of their life because I lied, even if it was for a reason that seemed harmless then. I keep asking myself if I can live with this. My conscience is eating me alive, but so is the fear of wrecking my own life. What would YOU do?
