I never imagined I’d be thrust into a situation like this. Last week, I was picking up a late-night snack at a convenience store a few blocks away from my apartment. As I was leaving, I heard raised voices in the alley next to the building. I saw two people in a heated argument—one stormed off, and the other, to my shock, was my older brother. Before I could call out to him, he slipped away. The next morning, news spread in our neighborhood about a serious assault that took place in that same alley. The victim is in the hospital, and the police are looking for witnesses. I put the pieces together and realized my brother must have been involved, but I don’t know exactly what happened after I left. The hardest part is that my brother and I are close. He’s made mistakes but has always been loyal to me, helping me out when I was at my lowest. I know firsthand he’s been struggling with anger issues and money trouble lately. My parents are devastated—they can’t believe he’d ever cross such a line. Now, the police have put out flyers asking the public to step forward. I keep thinking about the victim’s family, the possibility of closure, and the right thing to do. But if I say anything, I’m terrified my brother’s life will be over, and I’d be the one who destroyed our family. If I keep this to myself, I live with the guilt and fear it’ll spiral further. I’m paralyzed with indecision and anxiety, not sure how to weigh justice against blood. What would YOU do?
