I never thought I’d write something like this, but I don’t know who else I can even say this to. About two years ago, someone I know—a family friend—was arrested for a burglary at a local hardware store. I saw the case all over the news, and at the time, I told myself maybe he really did it, even though it felt weird. But the truth—the real truth—is that I was there that night. I wasn’t stealing, but I was trespassing on the property for a completely different (but still illegal) reason. Because I got scared and ran when I saw flashlights and heard police voices, the only person they found at the scene was my family friend, who was there to pick up a late paycheck from the owner. The police put the theft on him. I never came forward because I was terrified of getting charged for my own mistake, losing my job, and shaming my family. I keep telling myself that maybe the courts will figure it out. But he was convicted, and now he’s started a prison sentence. Whenever I see his wife and kids, or hear people talk about "justice being done," I feel physically sick. At the same time, I know what this would do to my own family, my career, and my own future if my part came out. I’d likely get prosecuted for trespassing, and people would always wonder if I was actually guilty of stealing. Coming forward means destroying my reputation and probably my finances—maybe everything. But staying silent means watching someone serve time for something I know he didn’t do. I’m truly paralyzed.
