I’ve lived in the same apartment for four years, and it’s the first place I’ve really felt safe since moving here alone. A neighbor later confided that our landlord secretly sublets rooms in the building, cramming in two or three undocumented tenants without proper contracts, just for cash. No safety checks, no records. I started noticing new faces coming and going at odd hours. I realized not only is this illegal—it could be dangerous for everyone, with fire codes ignored and people’s safety at risk. But here’s the problem: This is still my home. If I report my landlord, most likely everyone—including me—will be forced to leave. In our city, the rent is sky-high and I can’t afford to lose this place. If word gets out that I’m a "troublemaker," other landlords might not even consider renting to me in the future.
