I live in an old apartment complex I've called home for years. The rent is reasonable and it's close to my work. Recently, I accidentally received mail meant for someone else—letters from the city about a 'short-term rental violation.' My curiosity got the better of me, and I did some digging. I discovered my landlord has been illegally running several units on short-term rental sites, violating housing codes and dodging taxes. I'm not sure how long this has been going on, but it's definitely against the law and likely part of why we've had so many issues with noise and maintenance. If I report them, the city might fine or even shut down the building. I rely on this place, and affordable housing in my city is nearly impossible to find. But every month, I see new faces in the hallway—families pushed out, tourists coming and going. I know some of my neighbors are barely making ends meet.
