Do I Report My Partner’s Hit-and-Run Accident?

Category: law • Theme: Romantic Loyalty vs Civic Responsibility

I honestly never thought I’d be in this kind of situation. Last Friday, my partner came home late, visibly shaken. He told me, very quietly, that he’d been in a minor car accident, but left the scene because he panicked when he realized he’d hit a cyclist. He said the person seemed mostly okay and rode away, but now he’s terrified that the police will come after him. I didn’t see it happen, but I saw the scratches on our car and, that night, I found a cracked bike reflector in the back seat. The guilt of knowing what happened, and knowing he didn’t stop, has been sitting in my chest like a stone. He begged me not to tell anyone. But every day, I check the local news and social media, half-expecting to see something awful about a cyclist injured or worse, hoping that isn’t true. He’s been withdrawn, barely eating or sleeping. Part of me is deeply angry with him for running, and deeply worried for the cyclist. But another part knows that if I report this, it could ruin his life—he could lose his job, face jail, and honestly, I don’t know if he could handle that. We rent together, we planned our future here. But how can I look at myself if I let this go unchecked? If that cyclist suffered, shouldn’t someone be accountable? I haven’t told anyone—not a friend or family member. I keep replaying what I’d want if someone hit me, but also what it would mean to betray the person I love. The lines between right and wrong feel impossibly blurred, and I genuinely have no idea what to do next. What would YOU do?
