I’ve lived in my little one-bedroom for almost four years. The rent is way below market because my landlord and I have always had a friendly, informal arrangement. Lately, though, I discovered something troubling: he’s not reporting a single cent of my rent on his taxes. I found out when he accidentally forwarded me an email meant for his accountant, where he bragged about making cash on the side with "no paper trail" apartments. Since I pay cash every month—and he insists on it—it hit me that I’m part of his off-the-books operation. There’s another tenant who mentioned expecting to get evicted because she threatened to report him for unsafe conditions. With friends and the news always talking about housing justice, I feel like I should do something. But I can’t shake the anxiety of losing my home in retaliation. It’s almost impossible to find another affordable place in this city. I’m not sure the authorities would even protect me fully, and I could end up homeless over this. At the same time, part of me feels complicit—am I just helping him cheat the system for my own benefit? I could try to report him anonymously, but what if it backfires?
